Reader Remarks on:

Pregnancy and Childbirth in Women with MS

Use of DMD glatiramer up to conception

James A. Charles, MD, FAAN, New Jersey Medical School, Newark, NJ, 13 Feb 2010 12:10 AM EST

Competing interests: None declared

The percent of women ages 15-44 who are infertile or cannot conceive is approximately 11%. Since many fertile couples do not conceive on initial attempts, there will be many female MS patients that will be left unprotected without DMD if these agents are discontinued prior to conception attempt. Since glatiramer is FDA Category B, protecting MS patients with glatiramer up until conception is reasonable. This leaves at most a 3 month first trimester period of MS relapse vulnerability until rising estrogen levels in the 2nd and third trimester confer some protection against MS attacks.
