Martin A. Samuels, MD, FAAN, MACP, DSc (hon), Editor-in-Chief

Martin A. Samuels, MD, FAAN, MACP, DSc (hon), is Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and winner of the institution’s first Faculty Prize for Excellence in Teaching. He is the Neurologist-in-Chief at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, and former Director of the Harvard-Longwood Neurology Training Program. Dr. Samuels is an internationally renowned teacher-clinician, a premier diagnostician, and a leading authority on the interface between neurology and general medicine. His major fields of expertise include neurocardiology, neurohematology, neurogastroenterology, neurohepatology, neuronephrology, and the neurologic aspects of organ transplantation. He has edited several seminal neurology textbooks, developed a definitive instructional video on clinical neurology for practicing physicians, and authored numerous articles and book chapters. He is the 2006 recipient of the AB Baker Award for Lifetime Achievement in Neurologic Education. Dr. Samuels was the Founding Editor of Journal Watch Neurology in 1999 and has been Editor-in-Chief since then.

Galen V. Henderson, MD, Deputy Editor

Galen V. Henderson, MD, is Director, Division of Critical Care and Emergency Neurology, and Director, Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston. He serves as the Neurology Clerkship Director for all Harvard Medical School students at the hospital, and he has been elected to membership in the Academy at Harvard Medical School, a group involved in developing undergraduate medical education. Dr. Henderson has directed a CME course on neurocritical care for the American Academy of Neurology and is on the Critical Care and Emergency Neurology Executive Board of the AAN. He is also on the Executive Board of the Northeast Affiliate of the American Heart Association. He has been Deputy Editor of Journal Watch Neurology since the publication's launch in 1999.

Clive Hawkins, MD, DM, Advisory Board Member

Clive Hawkins, MD, DM, is Professor of Clinical Neurology at Keele University Medical School and Consultant Neurologist in the Regional Neuroscience Centre at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, U.K. He trained as a research fellow, senior registrar, and clinical lecturer in neurology at the Institute of Neurology and National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, and University College Hospitals, London. His major clinical interest is multiple sclerosis, with special focus on disease-modifying therapy and neuro-ophthalmology. His major research interests in multiple sclerosis include the genetics of susceptibility and outcome/disability in MS. He is collaborating with the Harvard-MIT Broad Institute, Cambridge, MA, and with Cambridge University, U.K., heading the northwest MS genetics group as part of the International MS Genetics Consortium. He is also working on clinical trials of new treatments for relapsing/remitting and progressive MS, as Director of the Keele MS Clinical Trials Unit and as principal investigator for major international, multicenter, randomized controlled trials in MS. Dr. Hawkins joined the Journal Watch Neurology Advisory Board in early 2008.

Bryan M. Kies, MD, Advisory Board Member

Bryan M. Kies, MD, is a Senior Specialist Neurologist at Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He obtained an MBChB from the University of Cape Town. He also holds the titles of Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK), Fellow of the College of Physicians (SA), Fellow of the College of Neurology (SA), and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (UK). He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate clinical neurology in Cape Town. Publications have included book chapters on the neurologic examination and on Parkinson disease treatment. His research interests are Parkinson disease, headache, and epilepsy. He is the national principal investigator in clinical trials of new medications for Parkinson disease and has been an investigator in trials for migraine, epilepsy, stroke, and Alzheimer disease. Dr. Kies is the secretary of the College of Neurologists of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa and is an examiner in their specialist neurology examinations. He is the past treasurer of the Neurological Association of South Africa. He has collaborated with patient advocacy groups, the World Health Organization, and international epilepsy organizations. He has worked in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, where he was a postgraduate fellow at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases in London. He is a former member of organizing committees of joint conferences of the Royal College of Physicians, the Neurological Association of South Africa, and the University of Cape Town. He joined the Journal Watch Neurology Advisory Board in early 2008.

Jun Kimura, MD, Advisory Board Member

Jun Kimura, MD, is Professor Emeritus at Kyoto University in Japan and Professor in the Department of Neurology at Iowa University Health Care, Iowa City. His clinical and research interests are neurophysiology, electrodiagnostic medicine, and neuromuscular diseases. He has published about 350 original articles, 6 books, and 65 book chapters on neurology and electrophysiology. He is a past president of the World Federation of Neurology and is a former president of the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology, and the Japanese Neurological Society. He also holds honorary memberships in several national medical societies worldwide. Dr. Kimura has served on the Journal Watch Neurology Advisory Board since the publication's launch in 1999.

Edward H. Koo, MD, Advisory Board Member

Edward H. Koo, MD, is Professor in the Department of Neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego, and Associate Director of the university’s Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. Trained in neurology and neuropathology, Dr. Koo has research interests in cellular and molecular biologic aspects of neurodegeneration. He focuses primarily on laboratory research but also is active in general neurology clinics and in assessing patients with Alzheimer disease who are research participants. Dr. Koo has served on the Journal Watch Neurology Advisory Board since the publication's launch in 1999.

Amy A. Pruitt, MD, Advisory Board Member

Amy A. Pruitt, MD, is a practitioner and Director of Medical Student Education in Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, Philadelphia. Trained in internal medicine and neurology, Dr. Pruitt’s clinical and research interests include neuro-oncology, multiple sclerosis, headache, and medical education. She has authored several articles on these and related topics. Dr. Pruitt has been a member of the Journal Watch Neurology Advisory Board since the publication's launch in 1999.

Thomas D. Sabin, MD, Advisory Board Member

Thomas D. Sabin, MD, is Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Neurology at Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston. He has broad research and clinical interests within neurology, including neurologic emergencies, coma, Parkinson disease and other movement disorders, leprosy, dementia, neuropathy, and stroke. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (in neurology) and a member of the American Academy of Neurology, for which he has served in several capacities. Dr. Sabin has authored numerous scientific articles, has been a section editor of a textbook on primary care and general medicine, and has edited a book on chronic fatigue syndrome. He has served on the Journal Watch Neurology Advisory Board since the publication's launch in 1999.

Thomas R. Swift, MD, Advisory Board Member

Thomas R. Swift, MD, is Professor and former Chair of the Department of Neurology at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta. His primary interest is in clinical neurology with expertise in clinical neurophysiology and neuromuscular disease. He is President of the American Academy of Neurology and has been President of the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, President of the Society of Clinical Neurologists, and Chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Myasthenia Gravis Association. An article he coauthored in 1970, "Treatment of Parkinson's Disease with L-Dopa," reporting the first effective treatment for PD, is one of the most frequently cited medical articles of all time. Dr. Swift has been a member of the Journal Watch Neurology Advisory Board since the publication's launch in 1999.

Jaime Toro, MD, Advisory Board Member

Jaime Toro, MD, is Chief of the Section of Neurology at Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá and Professor and Director of the Program of Neurology at the University of El Bosque, Santa Fe de Bogotá, Colombia. His clinical and research work focuses on multiple sclerosis, and he has edited two major neurology textbooks. He received his training in general neurology in his native country of Colombia and in neurophysiology in Washington, D.C. From 1986 to 1988, he was President of the Colombian Neurological Association. Dr. Toro has served on the Journal Watch Neurology Advisory Board since the publication's launch in 1999.

Vivian U. Fritz, MD, PhD, Advisory Board Member 1999–2007

Vivian U. Fritz, MD, PhD, is Professor of Neurology, Emeritus, at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa. She is former Chair of Neurology at the University of the Witwatersrand and former Chief Neurologist at the Johannesburg and Helen Joseph Hospitals in South Africa. Dr. Fritz began her medical career specializing in cardiology before choosing ultimately to specialize in neurology. She subsequently received a PhD in stroke and carotid artery disease. Dr. Fritz continues to teach and see patients and conducts medicolegal evaluations. She founded the Stroke Foundation of Southern Africa and organizes The South African Stroke Symposia. Dr. Fritz was a member of the Journal Watch Neurology Advisory Board from 1999 to 2007.

Françoise Gray, MD, PhD, Advisory Board Member 1999–2007

Françoise Gray, MD, PhD, is Professor of Pathology (Neuropathology) at Hôpital Lariboisière and Faculté de Médecine at Lariboisière-Saint Louis, Université Denis Diderot (Paris VII). Sshe is President of the International Society of Neuropathology and Head, Department of Pathology, Hôpital Lariboisière, Paris. Dr. Gray received training in France in both neurology and neuropathology. She conducts research in general neuropathology, infectious diseases of the central nervous system (particularly AIDS-related CNS infections), prion diseases, muscle pathology, and forensic neuropathology. She has also edited neuropathology textbooks for medical students and physicians. She served on the Journal Watch Neurology Advisory Board from 1999 to 2007.

Christopher Hawkes, MD, FRCP, Advisory Board Member 1999–2007

Christopher Hawkes, MD, FRCP, is Consultant Neurologist at the Essex Neurosciences Centre in Romford, Essex, United Kingdom. Dr. Hawkes's current research interests include multiple sclerosis epidemiology and disorders of olfaction, particularly related to neurodegenerative diseases such as parkinsonism and Alzheimer disease. He also treats patients with MS and patients with tremor. He has conducted research on the epidemiology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, dorsal column stimulation in MS, glioma epidemiology, and diagnostic methods in clinical neurology. Dr. Hawkes works with postgraduates and undergraduate students as a Neurology Tutor at the Essex Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery. He has been an Honorary Lecturer, Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London, and an Honorary Consultant, National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square. Dr. Hawkes served on the Journal Watch Neurology Advisory Board from 1999 to 2007.

Alberto Portera-Sanchez, MD, Advisory Board Member 1999–2009

Alberto Portera-Sanchez, MD, is Professor of Neurology, Emeritus in the Department of Neurology at Madrid Complutense University, Spain. He was trained in pediatrics in France and in neurology in the U.S. (following U.S. Neurology Board requirements). Dr. Portera-Sanchez’s clinical interests focus on training neurology students. He has edited several books on neurodegenerative diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, and neuroepidmiology and authored numerous articles on these topics, as well as on the connections between science and art. He is an honorary member of both the American Neurological Association and the American Academy of Neurology; a member of the New York Academy of Sciences; and a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (London), the Royal National Academy of Medicine of Spain, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is also President of the Finance Committee of the World Federation of Neurology. Dr. Portera-Sanchez was a member of the Journal Watch Neurology Advisory Board from the publication's launch in 1999 to 2009.
